Free State

The Free State is a vast, open region located in the central interior of South Africa and is well known for its wide plains, crop fields, and open landscapes. This area offers excellent Plains Game hunting as well as very good Buffalo hunting opportunities, making it a valuable and versatile hunting destination within our safari areas.

The open terrain creates a different hunting experience compared to the thicket and mountains of the Eastern Cape or the sandy savannas of the Kalahari. Hunting here often involves spotting game at distance and planning careful stalks across open ground, offering a challenging and rewarding style of hunting.

The Free State is also one of South Africa’s most well-known wing shooting regions, with large maize and sunflower fields attracting a variety of bird species during the season, making it possible to combine wing shooting with plains game or buffalo hunting depending on the time of year.

Due to its central location, the Free State fits perfectly into multi-area safaris, allowing hunters to experience different regions, habitats, and species during a single South African safari. This makes it an excellent addition to a longer safari itinerary and adds even more variety to the overall hunting experience.
