Useful Information

The Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape, located on the south-eastern seaboard of South Africa, is strikingly beautiful with diverse landscapes. Whether you are planning a hunting safari or a photographic safari you will soon discover the excitement from its unspoiled emerald green coastline, to its semi-arid Karoo region to the grassy plains and rolling hills, scrub bush, lush forests and spectacular mountain ranges. South Africa's Eastern Cape is rapidly becoming the ultimate destination for all travelers to South Africa.

This hauntingly beautiful region not only is rich in South African history, but can also boast about being the cradle of human culture. Nearby archaeological sites have revealed evidence of cultural activity predating sites found in other parts of the world. There are scores of ancient sites including dwelling sites and traditional hunter-gatherer way of life of the aboriginal people in the area who are usually known as the San. Grahamstown was founded in 1815 as a British garrison to drive the Xhosa people eastwards across the Fish River. The Xhosa people struggled to preserve their traditional customs and way of life and fought for 100 years for their independence and heritage in series of frontier wars.

The Eastern Cape is no longer the scene of conflict and strife as its people now embody the spirit of the many and varied cultures who met here and made their mark. Today that rich heritage is evident in the people of the area, who from all walks of life are extremely hospitable and friendly. You can explore and visit the colonial towns and villages the British settlers established years ago.
